Nagapattinam, as the name depicts (pattinam), is a coastal district in Tamil Nadu. Also known as ‘Nagai’, it is referred to as ‘the city of Coromandel’. The district came to prominence during the period of Medieval Cholas and Pandyas, decades back to sangam-age. The Cholas controlled the area around Bay of Bengal with Nagapattinam as the main port. As also mentioned in the historical novel ‘‘Ponniyin Selvan”, the Chudamani Vihara in Nagapattinam was constructed by Sri Vijayan King Sri Mara Vijayattunga Varman on 1006 CE with the help of Great King Raja Raja Cholan. 

Tourism is a major economic driver with the presence of heritage and historic points like Chudamani Vihar, Velankanni church, Nagore Dargah, Soundararaja Perumal Temple, and Kayarohanaswami Temple.

The main occupation of families residing in Nagapattinam is fishing in the waters of Bay of Bengal. Because of its location, it is one of the most cyclone and tsunami-prone districts in all of Tamil Nadu. And every time the district is hit the 697,000 inhabitants face the full force of the disaster.

“நாகை” என்று செல்லமாக அழைக்கப்படும் நாகப்பட்டினம், பண்டைய காலமுதல் துறைமுக நகரமாகவே இருந்துவருகிறது. நாகை மாவட்டம் சோழநாட்டின் கடற்கரையோர வணிக துறைமுகபட்டினமாக இருந்து வந்துள்ளது. சோழராட்சியில் ‘சோழகுல வல்லிபட்டினம்’ என்ற பெயரைப் பெற்றிருந்தது. கி.பி. 11-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் ஸ்ரீ விஜயம் மன்னர் சூளாமணிவர்மன் நாகையில் ‘சூளாமணி விகாரை’யை அமைத்தான். இந்த பெளத்தபள்ளிக்கு இராசராசனும் அவன் மகன் இராசேந்திரனும் ‘ஆனைமங்கலம்’ என்ற ஊரை பள்ளிச்சந்தமாக தானமாக அளித்துள்ளனர்.

தமிழ்நாட்டின் சமூக நல்லிணக்க மாவட்டம் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் இம்மாவட்டத்தில் நாகூர், வேளாங்கண்ணி, காயாரோகண சுவாமி கோயில் உள்ளது. இந்த புண்ணிய தலங்களுக்கு அதிகமான சுற்றுலா பயணிகள் வருகை தருகின்றனர். நாகப்பட்டினம் ஆழிப்பேரலையினால் மிகுந்த பாதிப்புக்குள்ளாகும் ஒரு மாவட்டமாகும்.

கிட்டத்தட்ட 120 கி.மீ வங்காள விரிகுடா கடற்கரையைக் கொண்டிருப்பதால், இந்நகரின் முக்கிய தொழில் என்பது கடலில் மீன்பிடித் தொழிலாகும். உப்பளத்தொழில் இம்மவாட்டத்தில் சிறு வணிகர்களாலும், பெருவணிகர்களாலும் நடத்தப்படுகின்றன.
